Garden Update 8-12-08 – Lessons Learned

So it’s been two months since I’ve started my little garden. My first post here, talked about my excitement.

Today, I’m still excited, but it sure is hard work. I’m so glad I decided to start in babysteps rather than ripping out my entire backyard for a gigantic vegetable garden.

My cucumbers have been really fun. The girls and I look everyday and are able to pick some about every other day. These three plants have saved me about $10 so far on my grocery bill. This is a keeper, I’ll be doing this fun veggie again.

The watermelon has been fun for the family to see it really spread, we have two little ones starting to grow. My youngest daughter LOVES watermelon, so this is going to be a very special treat.

My tomatoes had a disease, so I bought two more plants. Still waiting for them to ripen.

I did plant yellow and red bell peppers. Turns out the yellow was a somewhat green with a hint of yellow and my red pepper never turned red, I’m hoping it was a mis-labeled and I grew some of the best peppers around.

Feeling about mediocre. I added a hot pepper varity, and cilantro, hoping I’ll be able to figure out how to make salsa. Oh and the celery failed, I think.

I’ve got a whole bunch more to learn, but at least I know the cucumbers are a keeper! I loved this part of the project.

  1. Looks great…I should head over to your house for my veggies!!! I was bummed this year to not have veggies in the ground due to space issues!

  2. You bet, when the watermelon is time to pick… you can have some. Um..do you know when that is..lol.

  3. Awesome garden you got goin’ there! It’s always exciting to see folks getting hooked on gardening. Your cukes look might tasty – where is it that you live?

Let those green peppers mature some more and they’ll turn red. Most “sweet” peppers (as opposed to “hot” peppers) start out green and then turn colors as they mature. Weird, huh?

  4. Hi Lisa, it’s great to see you are gardening. My grandpa was an avid gardner and taught me alot about gardening and caring for your plants. It’s something I’ve done for over 15 years and after his passing in 2002 I can feel his presence whenever I am in the garden. I look forward to teaching my 15 month old son to garden as soon as he can stand. There is a sense of serenity and connectivity in the garden with the plants, mother earth, and those that are there with you.

    Your garden looks beautiful!

  5. Well Hello Giovanni (you know the urge to say Johnny is there right?)

I’m so glad to see you at my little blog. Yes gardening is my way of clearing the brain. I had done lots of flowers and this year’s challenge was to start small – with the vegetables. I agree with you about the serenity. I’ve re-adjusted my thinking and priorities and the girls love to watch the plants change, grow and develop. We all oooh and ahh together in this learning process.

Thanks for the compliment… I’ll be looking forward to seeing pictures of your garden when you have them.

  6. I think you have done a great job for being your first year. Truth be known, we all have problems even us experienced gardeners. Always something to learn or experiment with, keep a positive outlook and gardening can be fun.
