Back when I was living in Illinois, I was a member of a garden club. It was linked to the state and had officers and such. It became quite – ahem – boring! I wanted to learn from these woman (which were all more than 30 years my age) about practical gardening tips. I didn’t realize it was a completely different agenda. I was a member for 5 years, mostly because of support. I wanted a group that would teach me more things, while they experiment with more sophisticated plantings.
I want to plant food – I’m more of a flower lady. But with rising costs of groceries I wanted to try. I could either do this two ways. 1) get all the stuff I can imagine and try to overcome the big project I had just gotten myself into or 2) let my daughter pick out 6 items and start with that! See life does teach us lessons, I let my daughter pick out one pumpkin, one watermelon, two cucumber, four red pepper (ok that was my pick) a raspberry bush and a tomato plant. Totally manageable, actually I almost lost the pumpkin for lack of a place to put it. I didn’t want to start a whole bed, I wanted to plant them along the house where it was already tilled.
Last month I saw that the Urban Garden Gang was gathering at Stumpjacks in Two Rivers. When I went, let’s just say… I’m inspired. From this small gang (due to just forming a few months ago) I have learned more than I did in the 5 years with the other club. Now here is where it gets really good. Not only are these ladies(and men) educated about farming and planting, but they are such awesome and intriguing people with intelligence. They decided NOT to form a club – but to have an organized time to socialize about gardening! I know! Isn’t it great. No dues, great atmosphere, and brilliant people
Last night I learned about lasagna gardening. Basically it’s making a bed for you plants just about anywhere without having to till dirt! Hello! No hard labor – I’m all over that! So over the weekend, I’ll be adding to my very small garden. Baby steps baby steps.
On another note – three gladioli are sprouting in my flower bed! Woot (they are my favorite).
